Maths Week - Scale drawings

Last week we had a all math's week. Our focus was scale drawings and this was my second time doing this. We had to look for a picture we wanted to draw. I deiced to draw Lisa from the Simpsons. We had to make sure that when we draw our picture on our enlargement piece that the squares match the smaller version and looks like the actual picture the ratio was 1:2. I ruled 1 centimeter lines on our original piece and on my enlargement I ruled 2 centimeter lines.  I found drawing it square by square hard because you had to make sure everything was in the correct place. Coloring in our enlargement and darkening the outlines was the best part for me. Next time if I could change it I would shape the head and eyes differently because the don't look like the original piece. This years scale drawing is better than last years scale drawing probably because I have had experience doing this last year.

2 words 1 minute

Today we used the ‘2 words 1 minute’ challenge to write a description about the Winter Olympics. After talking in pairs about the things we knew about the winter olympics we created a list of words (vocabulary) that would help us write our description. We chose the words ‘equipment’ and ‘respect’ to help us think about what we were going to write.

We talked about ideas with a partner, then we had 1 minute to put those ideas into sentences. We had to try our best to use all the words on our vocab list. After the minute was up we had 2 minutes to reread what we had written and make changes if anything didn’t make sense or if we had words and punctuation in the wrong place. When we finished checking we had 2 more minutes to carry on writing our descriptions.

The words that are highlighted are the words that were in my word list. I made sure that I had
sentences that made sense, and I also used a word list to make my writing even better.
I need to try stay focused and pay attention to my own work.

Chinese New Year- Explanation

How Chinese New Year Is celebrated?

The famous Chinese New Year is celebrated around the world. It is celebrated with people cleaning their homes for the start of spring. People around the world put up red posters with poetic sentences on them and put them on their doors. Chinese New Year is also the time where friends and family meet up and enjoy their time together.

Near the end of the holiday people light lanterns and either let them fly in the sky or on let them float on top of water.  In the middle of the celebration people light fireworks and firecrackers. People often give unmarried people and kids red envelopes with money inside.

At night people eat their dinner packed with lots of delicious foods. They celebrate with some specific foods like Shrimp , Noodles and Egg Rolls. These three foods represent a long life, happiness and gold bars. Foods that are common when eating on chinese new year is fish,Wassabi,Kimchi, vegetables , rice and curry. Other cultures celebrate chinese new year because of the special events that happen.

The tradition is also about 12 animals. These animals competed in a race which the Jade emperor will chose its year for it to be celebrated. The recent year 2018 is the dog. Chinese New Year is celebrated because a dragon would arrive on the new moon and goes when the full moon comes up.

People celebrate Chinese New Year to remember the Chinese legend about the Mysterious beast who would visited the town and scared the people in the village… But a old man stumbled towards the village and told them about the beasts weakness. The colour red , loud noises and more. The beast then left on the full moon never to visit again.

We have started to write an explanation about the Chinese New Year. Nyjah and I have worked collaborative together to finish this task. I have learnt a lot about a structure of an explanation. We went into groups of four so we can check each others work. We had joined Savelina and Mele. They had checked for mistakes on our work.
